What Is Doxycycline Used For?

Doxycycline 100mg is indicated for a broad range of infections. It is a first-line treatment for Respiratory Tract Infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) and Urinary Tract Infections. It is highly effective against Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like Chlamydia and Syphilis. Additionally, it is used for severe Acne, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), and as a Malaria Prophylaxis for travelers. Because it targets Vibrio cholerae, it is also used in the management of Cholera.

⚠️ Important Safety Warning

Avoid Use in Pregnancy and Early Childhood: Doxycycline can cause permanent discoloration of developing teeth (yellow-gray-brown) and may affect bone growth. It is generally avoided in pregnant women and children under 8 years old. Photosensitivity: This medication makes your skin significantly more sensitive to sunlight. Wear sunscreen and protective clothing to avoid severe sunburn. Do not take with milk or antacids, as calcium, magnesium, and aluminum interfere with its absorption.

How to Use

For most infections, the standard dose is $200mg$ on the first day (as a single dose or $100mg$ every 12 hours), followed by a maintenance dose of $100mg$ daily. Take Doxycycline with a full glass of water while sitting or standing upright. Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking the capsule to prevent esophageal irritation or ulceration.

Note: It can be taken with food if it causes stomach upset, but avoid dairy products within 2 hours of your dose. Always finish the entire course prescribed, even if you feel better, to prevent antibiotic resistance.

Common Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Some users may experience a sore throat or a "fuzzy" tongue (oral thrush) due to a secondary fungal overgrowth. Seek medical attention if you experience severe headaches or visual changes, as these can be signs of increased pressure inside the skull (intracranial hypertension).

Storage Instructions

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep the capsules in their original blister packaging to protect them from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the foil.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why can't I lie down after taking it?

A: Doxycycline is highly acidic. If the capsule gets stuck in your esophagus or moves back up (reflux), it can cause painful sores or ulcers in the throat. Staying upright ensures it reaches the stomach safely.

Q: Is it effective for Malaria prevention?

A: Yes. When used for prophylaxis, it is usually started 1–2 days before entering a malaria-endemic area, taken daily during the stay, and continued for 4 weeks after leaving.

Q: Can I take it with my morning cereal and milk?

A: No. The calcium in milk binds to the Doxycycline and prevents your body from absorbing the medicine. Wait at least 2 hours after having dairy before taking your dose.

Q: Does it interact with birth control pills?

A: Some antibiotics can slightly reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. It is recommended to use a backup method (like condoms) while taking Doxycycline.

Q: Do I need a prescription?

A: Yes. To ensure it is the correct treatment for your specific infection and to prevent resistance, a valid prescription is required at Sanlive Pharmacy.
